Pigmentation is a normal phenomenon of skin. It shows that there is melanin present in our skin. Melanin is a natural pigment present in our skin, there is a special cell called melanocytes which create and develop melanin. We all have an equal number of melanocytes, but some of us make more melanin than others. Melanin determines the colour of our eyes, hair, and our skin. Our skin has adapted to the creation of melanin according to the environment surrounding it.
The most useful function of Melanin is that it absorbs the UV rays emitted by sun, thus whenever you are under the hot sunny weather, your body will develop more melanin, to protect you. So, a tan on the beach is just a way for people to get more melanin.
But some of us face the problem of hyperpigmentation. This problem is defined as the increase of melanin in a specific area of one’s body, which creates a discrepancy from the surrounding skin making the spot appear much darker. This can happen in spots or in clusters. When this appears on one’s face it creates a problem for oneself. To solve the problem of pigmentation we can do 2 things.
Laser therapy which induces the vaporisation of tissues which have pigmentation of it can lead to great success. What happens is the area is specially targeted by a laser, which induces collagen growth and a new skin shows up. But, ablative lasers are not recommended for people with dark skins.
Chemical peels have shown to be effective in areas which have hyperpigmented regions within it.
